Kirants Monastery

9 August 2023
in Monasteries of Tavush, Tavush
Kirants Monastery

The Kirants Monastery, an 8th-century marvel nestled around 10 kilometers southwest of Kirants village in Armenia’s Tavush Province, holds a captivating history that resonates with love, craftsmanship, and tragedy. Unveiling its distinctive character, this Armenian monastery defies convention by being predominantly crafted from brick and mortar. The word “Kir” signifies mortar, while “-ants” adds depth, indicating the uneven, imperfect nature of the craft.

Yet, it is the poignant tale behind Kirants that truly sets it apart. The narrative unfolds in the life of a talented craftsman and mason who falls deeply in love with the daughter of a wealthy man. Their love story transcends the confines of class, and the craftsman’s heart soars with hope. A pivotal moment arrives when he seeks the rich man’s approval to marry his beloved. The wealthy father proposes a seemingly impossible condition: the craftsman must construct a church for the village.

Undeterred by the challenge, the craftsman undertakes the task with unwavering determination. The church takes shape, brick by brick, reflecting not just his skill but also his love for the woman who has captured his heart. As completion draws near, he stands atop the “drum or dome” of the church. An encounter with the rich man unveils the heart-wrenching truth. The craftsman inquires about the church’s appearance, to which the rich man responds, “kiren antsa” – the line of the brick and mortar is uneven.

In that moment, a devastating realization dawns upon the craftsman. The rich man’s words are not merely about the church’s construction; they hold the weight of dashed dreams and unfulfilled promises. A life that was once brimming with hope and love meets an abrupt end as the craftsman tragically leaps from the “drum or dome,” taking his own life.

The name “Kirants Monastery” is etched in memory of this heartrending tale. It embodies not just the craftsman’s craftsmanship, but the depth of his love, the pain of unattained dreams, and the resilience of the human spirit. The Kirants Monastery stands not only as a testament to architectural ingenuity but also as a poignant reminder of the stories that shape our history and enrich the fabric of our cultural heritage.
