The client, deeply rooted in the local heritage, entrusted a piece of land to the Armenian Apostolic Church. To honor the memory of their ancestors, they envisioned a remarkable endeavor – the construction of a modest yet significant church. This sacred place, situated in Koghb Village of Tavush, stands as a tribute to familial legacy and historical reverence.
Nestled within the undulating terrain, the church’s design harmoniously integrates with the natural topography. It takes the form of a basilica, gracefully cascading down the slope of the hillside. Although petite in comparison to grand cathedrals, this building encapsulates the essential elements that define a place of worship – a bell tower, a narthex, a baptistery, a sanctuary for services, and a repository for sacred vestments.
Crafted using sizable stones, the construction follows the traditional Midis technique. Wooden formwork leaves its imprint on the exposed concrete surfaces of arches and ceilings, adding to the charm of authenticity. An ornate frieze adorns the perimeter, narrating a visual tale that encircles the primary structure. The intricate bas-reliefs, skillfully carved by sculptors Arutyun Karapetyan and Melik Shahbazaryan, breathe life into the edifice.
A journey to this sacred sanctuary in Koghb Village promises an intimate encounter with history, faith, and the artistic mastery that transcends time. It stands as a testament to the power of honoring one’s roots while contributing to the living heritage of Armenia.
