This 13th-century monastic ensemble, located 3.5 km southwest of Varagavan village, is a marvel of history and architecture. Established by King David II Kyurikian in the late 12th century and expanded by his grandson Vasak II in the early 13th century, Nor Varagavank is a treasure trove of the Kyurikian dynasty’s legacy.
The heart of the complex lies in the Holy Virgin Church, an architectural masterpiece designed by the skilled hand of Hovhan. With its cruciform interior, splendidly carved multi-colored stone reliefs, and two entrances, this sacred sanctuary exudes magnificence. The Surb Nshan chapel, nestled in the southeastern corner, whispers stories of antiquity through its dual apses adorned with intricate animal and botanical motifs.
Nor Varagavank’s significance transcends its architectural grandeur. It housed revered figures like Archbishop Hovhanes Tvetsi, who left an indelible mark on Armenian religious and cultural history.
