Members of the National Assembly and Senate of France have reached out to the French Foreign Minister with a proposal to open a consulate in Armenia’s Syunik region.
In a letter signed by the Chairman of the France-Armenia Friendship Group in the National Assembly, Ann-Laurence Petel, and the head of the same group in the Senate, Gilbert-Luc Devinaz, addressed to Catherine Colonna, the following points are highlighted:
▪️ By opening a consular office, France would take an important step in safeguarding Armenia’s territorial integrity with the establishment of a consulate in the capital of Syunik – either in Kapan or Goris.
▪️ The consulate would contribute to regional stability and serve as a valuable outpost for fostering cooperation between Paris and Yerevan.
▪️ Syunik is linked to Yerevan by a single road – a corridor connecting Armenia to the outside world through its border with Iran, spanning 35 km. During the 44-day war, this road remained the only open route.
▪️ Azerbaijan has ambitions regarding Syunik, aiming to establish a land connection between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan through this region.
